Then we go to Maras, from where we can get to the salt mines. The salt mines show a strange spectacle of beauty. Located on an open hill above the Urubamba Valley, a natural saltwater stream runs underground. In pre-Inca times, they have been evaporating the salty water from this stream to get the salt that is left behind.
The highly salty water emerges in a spring, a natural outlet from the underground stream. After visiting the salt mines near Maras, we continue a short distance to the ruins of Moray. The ruins are made up of three coliseums, which are believed to have been used by the Incas as a kind of open-air culture laboratory. The Coliseums consist of several huge terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is approximately 30m / 98ft deep. The purpose of these depressions is still uncertain, but their depth and orientation with respect to the wind and the sun creates a temperature difference of up to 15 ° C between the top and bottom. The Incas possibly used this large temperature difference to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops.
We will return to the city of Cusco at approximately 2:00.
Free morning to relax.
In the afternoon there will be a transfer to the airport for your departure to Lima.
